Pass the Parasol

30 Jul

It may be the end of the July, but this Seattlite is squeezing every splash of sunshine I can out of this summer.   Living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, we really have to earn our summers.  Take for example this week, the forecast calls for mid-70’s all week.  Fabulous right?!  What the forecast does not tell you is that the mornings will start out dreary and overcast with a high of about 57 until late afternoon.  Welcome to a Seattle summer.

To celebrate this fabulous season and the unpredictability of a summer in the Northwest, I’m sharing my latest summer obsession.  I was reintroduced to this beauty last weekend at a local fair when my little princess needed shade from the blistering heat.  A mere $4.00 and and an obsession later, I give you the parasol.  Whether dangling in a drink or shading from the sun, the parasol oozes Arm Candy.

Hello Gorgeous

28 Jul

It’s hard to find baby blankets that rival the softness and style of Little Giraffe blankets.  That is not to say the competition is not out there.  In my opinion, the biggest rival is a San Francisco based company by the name of Tourance.

Tourance has a gorgeous line of baby blankets, one of which I received 3 years ago when my son was born. (click here to see) It was then that my love affair with their blankets began.

I have since ordered a blanket for my daughter (here) and gifted a blanket as well (see here).  The blankets are absolutely gorgeous and more importantly, they are beautifully crafted.  My children’s blankets have held up wonderfully in the washing machine and endured everything from spillage to spit up, while remaining stain free of course.

I absolutely adore a number of other items from the Tourance line and look forward to adding a couple other items to my Tourance collection.

Here are a couple of my other Tourance faves:

Arm Candy Apps

26 Jul

After a a year or so of resisting the iPhone and everything Apple, I caved.  I don’t know exactly why I was so anti- iPhone for as long as I was, but I definitely was.  I think the tipping point was having to replace my blackberry for the umpteenth time and continuing to pay $99 for knock-off replacements that fell apart as soon as I got them out of the box.

It has been over a year and I am completely on the iPhone wagon. I’m actually even starting to like AT&T. (***boo, hiss**** I know, I know.) This post was not intended to be an Apple ad, but I have to give credit where credit is due. Apple got it right with the iPhone.   I know there are supposedly all kinds of kinks that Jobs and his peeps are trying to work out with the iphone 4, but I am strictly referring to the old school iPhone.

The biggest reason for my love of everything iPhone, is the Apps. The Apps are life changing right?! No drama here, just the truth. I wanted to share a list of some of my favorite Apps.  I put the list together for moms and mothers-to-be in mind, but obviously everyone can benefit from these Apps.  The following Apps are a little off the beaten path, and are of course in addition to the typical faves i.e. Google,  so here goes:

Arm Candy App Faves

  1. Sit or Squat Who hasn’t needed to find a bathroom fast? I just recently discovered this App and wish I would have had it while I was pregnant.  However, now that my 2 1/2 year old is out of diapers, bathrooms have become a part of my internal GPS and this App is a lifesaver.
  2. Foods to Avoid While Pregnant- When I was pregnant, I used this App EVERY time I went to the grocery store or ate out.  It was so easy to use and made shopping for safe foods extremely easy.
  3. iPregnancy-This was the most expensive App I purchased at a whopping $4.99, but I really like this App.  I used it frequently to look up information,  view images of what my baby might look like and to keep track of appointment info.
  4. aSleep This App is perfect for travel! If you have a baby or toddler that loves their mobile or music maker then this App is a must! aSleep lets you select the music sound of your liking and select the amount of time that works best for your little one.  Makes me sleepy just thinking of it!
  5. Good Food Near You- Jamie Oliver would definitely love this App and so do I!  This application helps you find healthy food locations near you, wherever you may be! In addition to locations, the App lists healthy foods along with their fat & calorie content! Yummy!
  6. Scrabble and/or Words with Friends-I have both of these Apps downloaded and love them equally! Words with Friends is fabulous for keeping Mommy brains from turning into complete mush and allows you to stay sharp and socialize with friends.  Scrabble is great when you are up at all hours and need something to do while feeding a baby in a dark room.
  7. Nike + and/or Nike Training- I hate to admit, but this App really does make running fun.  Burn the baby weight while logging miles on this program.
  8. E!- Motherhood is no excuse to fall behind on breaking celebrity news!
  9. OpenTable- Restaurant noise combined with screaming kids make phone reservations almost impossible! OpenTable allows you to make reservations from you phone without saying a word! It is super easy and stress free!
  10. Sex Offenders Search-Random, I know.  However, safety girl here, says play it safe.  As a Mom, I feel it is a duty to know where the sex offenders are in my neighborhood and this App makes it super easy!

So, there you have it! The world is literally in the palm of your hands! Enjoy a few of my faves and please be sure and share what Apps are rockin your world!

Arm Candy Travel Essentials

22 Jul

I love to travel.  I am the first to admit that travel was a lot easier prior to having kids, but with a few important travel essentials, traveling with kids is definitely do-able.  Regardless of whether you are traveling abroad or taking a weekend road trip, I’ve put together a list of a few of my must haves.  It’s a bit like Oprah’s favorite things, but not.  Let’s just call them:  Arm Candy Travel Essentials.

  1. Space Bags

These are a new discovery for me and they changed my life.  Yes, dramatic, but true.  Space bags are fabulous for a few reasons.  First, they shrink your clothes to about half the size in your suitcase.  Part of the maternal sacrifice that people often forget to mention, is that you have to share luggage space with your children.  It’s hard enough giving up your body and sleep, but luggage space?! Fear not fellow travelers! The space bag allows you to pack just as much, but in half the space.  Fabulous right!? The only con is that you have to be careful of the weight limit if flying.  You’ve been warned.  Second, these handy bags protect your clothes from liquids.  If you haven’t had the occasional liquid leak that has stained an item of clothing, consider yourself lucky.  Third, if you find yourself in a situation where you need to re-pack, it’s extremely easy to pull these out and shuffle things around.  Fourth, they are re-usable.  Fifth-do I really need to say more?

2.  A fabulous duffle- I have one which I love, by Lululemon (see here), however, I am lusting after another one by Halsea, that was recently featured on House of Glam Living. (Click here to see).  Once I convince darling hubs of how functional AND fabulous this bag is for our upcoming trip to Hawaii, it’s mine!!

I have found that when traveling, especially with more than one child, you need to bring the kitchen sink.  (i.e. games, toys, change of clothes, diapers, food, books, wipes, tide wipes etc). Therefore, think big. Other features I look for include an inside liner that is easy to clean and the roller feature is a must for moms on the go!

3.  A Shawl- Air Travel with a shawl for me is an absolute must. First, it tends to get chilly on a plane and a shawl functions as a wonderful warmer for mom or child.  Second, for breast-feeding moms, a shawl provides excellent (and fashionable) cover, especially when reaching for a bag to grab a hooter hider is difficult.  Lastly, when you get off the plane covered in who knows what, a shawl provides an excellent cover.

4. Scented Diaper Bags- Two words: recycled air.  Be a thoughtful traveler.

5. Ipod touch/Iphone/DVD player- For long flights, some sort of entertainment for your child is a must.  It’s hard to predict what in-flight entertainment will offer for your child, so better to be prepared.

6.  Patience-Travel is stressful for everyone.  Load up on deep breathing exercises or whatever works before you go.  I guarantee they will come in handy!

Happy travels!! Off for the weekend!

Great Expectations

22 Jul

Confession:  I’m a reality loving, celeb following junkie.  I buy US Weekly and have E and TMZ on my iPhone for the latest breaking celebrity news.  I find nothing more relaxing than flipping through a gossip magazine–Unless of course I am on a beach flipping through a gossip magazine, while getting a massage and sipping a Banana Bora or something of that sort.

Now that we have that out-of-the-way, I need to share my latest celeb obsession: Ms. Keys. I can’t get enough of her voice and every time I see her cute little preggers self, I imagine her singing lullabies to her perfect little bundle of joy and I fall deeper in love.

I can’t help but get excited about the creative juices that have got to be flowing for Ms. Keys and the effect that her bouncing baby will have on her music and the world.  Great expectations to say the least.

I’m attaching a few pics of her amazing maternity attire for inspiration.   Just be careful in those stilettos mama.

A couple of additional Great Expectations for 2010 include:

Love and marriage, love and marriage….

Congrats to fabulous, funny, cancer kickin’ Christina on her pregnancy!

Keeping up with the Pitts? Chris Daughtry announced he and his wife are expecting a boy and a girl! Great expectations for these twinsies!

She’s My Cherry Pie

21 Jul

I had never baked a pie.  That’s not true.  Let me rephrase.  I had never baked a pie that I had actually made myself.  I guess the secret is out:  I am no Martha Stewart.  However, the imaginary domestic goddess buried deep within me does like to come out and play once in a while.  Don’t be shocked if you don’t see her very often, or ever for that matter.  Like I said, she only comes out “once in a while”, like when the stars are completely aligned or as luck would have it I receive inspiration from a fellow blogger and my husband happens to bring home an enormous box of fabulous fresh cherries and places them on the kitchen counter.  I’m all for fate and it was a callin’ me towards the kitchen.  With my handy Better Homes & Garden Cook Book, box of cherries and sweet inspiration, I headed off to the kitchen, singing the following of course:

Five fabulous Cherry-Raspberry Pies later, all devoured by family and friends (ok, mostly me), I’m a total expert and off to pick raspberries!  Ho-hum.

Here is the fool proof recipe I followed:

1 1/4 cups granulated sugar (Splenda works too)

3 Tablespoons cornstarch or quick cooking tapioca

3 cups fresh or frozen unsweetened pitted tart red cherries

2 cups fresh or frozen lightly sweetened raspberries

  1. In a large bowl stir together the sugar and cornstarch; add cherries and raspberries.  Gently toss until coated and let mixture stand for about 15 minutes or until a syrup forms, stirring occasionally. (If using frozen fruit, let stand 45 minutes or until fruit is partially thawed but still icy.)
  2. Meanwhile, prepare and roll out pastry for double-crust pie.  Line a 9-inch pie plate with half the pastry.
  3. Stir cherry-raspberry mixture; transfer to pastry-lined pie plate.  Trim bottom pastry to edge of pie plate. Cut slits in remaining pastry; place on filling and seal.  Crimp edge if desired.
  4. Place pie on a baking sheet.  To prevent over-browning, cover edge of the pie with foil.  Bake in 375 degree oven for 30 minutes(or 50 for frozen fruit). Remove foil. Bake for 25-30 minutes more or until filling in center is bubbly and pastry is golden.  Cool on wire rack.
