The Party Circuit

20 Sep

Just because you enter motherhood, doesn’t mean you have to retire the party dress.  It might be a good idea to layoff the beer bong and keg stands, but hey, to each her own.  Just because the push-up bras have been traded in for nursing bras doesn’t mean you can’t throw a fabulous party.  Granted, the audience might be a little younger, but my almost three year-old will give most college boys a run for their money.  (In regards to energy, of course.) Let the partying begin!

One of the wonderful perks of joining labor classes and mommy groups is that you tend to end up with children who have birthdays all around the same time.  Enter the party circuit.  For our family, the party circuit runs from mid-September through the end of October.  Each weekend is reserved for at least one, often times two, of our favorite tots.  It is crazy. It is exhausting.  It is, above all, fabulous! I love nothing more than getting together with family and amazing friends to celebrate! I especially love celebrating life’s most amazing milestones.  Birthdays and showers are definitely at the forefront of my favorite celebratory milestones.

I’m not going to pretend to be Martha Stewart, but I try.  I tend to start with an idea and research like crazy for inspiration and additional creative touches.  Below are a few amazing party websites that I frequent for ideas and inspiration! Some ideas, I down right steal.  No need to invent the party wheel.

  1. Chickabug– I recently used this site to order personalized favor tags and buffet cards! The owner/designer is absolutely amazing to work with and extremely creative! Her products definitely add a personalized touch to any party!
  2. Party Poms- I can’t get enough of these gorgeous poms! They brighten up any room and add pops of color! Love! I have also used this particular vendor and had a wonderful experience! They have a beautiful selection of poms, include clear fishing wire and ship promptly! Fabulous!!
  3. Kara’s Party Ideas- This is where the real Martha’s congregate! Check out this site for the most AMAZING parties! This is where I often borrow creative ideas and seek inspiration!
  4. Modern Hostess- This is another party site that I often visit.  The blogger and creative genius behind the scenes is a friend and I trust her completely for party tips and seek out her site for party basics like stocking the bar and setting the table.  Send her your party idea and she will design an inspiration board to help get your creative juices flowing.  No creative juices?  No worries, just leave it to Steph to send some of her creative juices your way!

There you have it party people! Just because summer is making its way out, doesn’t mean you have to turn into a hermit! Grab your Arm Candies and put on your party hats!

Cheers!

Handprints of Hope

8 Sep

September 11th is right around the corner.  On a day that serves as a constant reminder of fear and loss, our country continues to inspire hope and love.  I am proud to be many things, but as the weekend approaches, I can’t help but feel proud to be an American and also proud to be a native Oregonian.

This September 11th, my hometown will be hosting a Faith, Hope, Love benefit concert sponsored by the non-profit organization Handprints of Hope.  The money raised will support 5 local children in the fight of their lives.  If you happen to be in the Southern Oregon area, be sure and drop by and show your support.  For those of you, like me, on other parts of the planet, please consider spreading the word and supporting the Arm Candy Confessions cause of the week.

TruLove

6 Sep

The first time I laid eyes on the all natural, mineral sunscreen, TruKid, I was smitten.  It didn’t take me long to spot the TruKid bevy of beauties from across the pool–strategically placed next to the shaved ice stand.  The chemical free, all natural description drew me in immediately and the delicious smell and vibrant colors were the key to my children’s hearts.

Over the last month,  my families love affair with TruKid has blossomed. Upon return from our summer vacation, where I had discovered TruKid, I contacted the founder/CEO, Jennifer Adams Bunkers to profess my love of her products.  I should have known that only a mother (mother of 6 for that matter), could have created such a safe and fun product line.  However, I did not expect that the founder would be a Supermom, raising six beautiful children AND saving children of the world from chemical filled products.  She is pretty amazing to say the least.

Somewhere between raising a family and saving the world, Jennifer managed to send me a box of amazing product to review.  After trying out a handful of TruKid products, my family and I concluded that they are all beyond fabulous.  They are bright, fun and bursting with personality.  The products are all extremely gentle and non-irritating, even on my youngest babies’ skin.   The Friendly Face Wash happens to be one of my absolute faves.  It makes washing your child’s face so easy–regardless of the time of day and is so extremely gentle.

All the products have diagrams on the labels that make it easy for kids to understand which body part that the TruKid product should be applied.  The kid friendly diagram also helps to promote self-bathing.  Just ask my son who now washes his face numerous times throughout the day.   It is hard not to smile when looking at these products, and it is wonderful knowing that TruKid products are as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside.  Just like our arm candy. Have I mentioned how much we love TruKid?

Our bath time favorites include:  Silly Shampoo, Friendly Face Wash, Bubbly Body Wash, Cool Condition and we wrap up with the Happy Face and Body Lotion. Yes, my son’s bath time routine has turned into a five step beauty regimen filled with a rainbow of TruKid products.  While it might seem like a lot of work, it is in fact the opposite.  My almost three-year old is able to use the body wash and face wash on his own, while I wash and condition his hair.  Each one of the products is fabulous on its’ own.  However, when you put them all together, you end up with a clean, soft, chemical free, delicious smelling family.

In summary, here is a wrap up of why the TruKid products are an Arm Candy Confessions must have:

Garden Envy

18 Aug

Confession:  I have a serious case of garden envy.  It seems as though everywhere I turn lately,  I am met with incredibly gorgeous, vibrant flowers.  It is a wonderful problem to have.  I love this time of year and beautiful botany plays a large role in my affection for this season.  One would think that someone with my love of flowers would have an incredible garden.  And that is where “one” would be wrong.  For the life of me, I can only seem to keep one plant alive.  It looks a little something like this:

The Dandelion.  I really detested these little beauties, until yesterday morning.  Last week I taught my son how to blow the seeds off of the Dandelions and to make a wish.  We had an amazing time. Fast forward to yesterday morning.  I was frantically trying to get my little loves ready to head out the door and my son is yelling “Momma, Momma, do you want to come blow with me.”   I knew immediately what he was referring to.  I turned the corner into the living room, where he HAD been playing, and my little Houdini had opened the door to the back yard (unlocked and removed the bar) and plucked a couple of dandelions.  He waved them excitedly in front of me.  After a mini-stroke, and some additional baby proofing,  I couldn’t help but melt.  In an instant, I became a lover of everything dandelion.  My backyard, which I typically try to avoid, became a garden of wishes.  The garden envy that I have been harboring all of a sudden didn’t seem so bad.  I grabbed my daughter and joined my son to start off our day with a few wishes.

Apparently I am not the only dandelion doter.  Check out these cute creations:

Rules to Dine By

3 Aug

DB Bistro Moderne. Image credit DB Bistro

Prior to having kids,  I use to love going out to eat.  Lately, not so much.  Having two children under the age of three has definitely made dining out a little more complicated.  My husband and I have been forced to learn which restaurants are kid-friendly and which aren’t so much.  I will be honest, for our family, this has been a very slow learning process and I have sat through many  meals mortified.  Hubs, however, loves his fine dining, especially while traveling and refuses to put off fine-dining until the kids are older.  As the saying goes, “I may have lost a battle, but I am winning the war.”  We have agreed on three rules that have made all the difference for us while dining out.

Here they are:

  1. If there is a restaurant he absolutely must dine in, then we go either for lunch or at 5pm for an early dinner. (And pray the restaurant is empty.)
  2. When making reservations he has to use the specific words, “is your restaurant kid-friendly.” Hubs tried to pull a fast one on me a couple of times by asking “do you accept kids.”  Can a restaurant really say “no” to this question? Kid-friendly is completely different.
  3. We have to be in and out in an hour. We sit and order for the kids immediately and ask to take care of our check when our meal is brought out.
  4. Always leave a good tip when dining with kids.  (I know I said three rules and this one is fairly obvious, but the wait staff truly make or break a dining experience and they should be compensated.)

In February, we dined at DB Bistro Moderne in Vancouver and had an amazing dining experience.  We of course arrived at 5pm, right in the middle of their staff meeting, but we were greeted with smiles and  instantly set up with our drinks and complimentary appetizers by Chef Stephane Istel.  The hostess was extremely accommodating and once we were seated, our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and fast.  Chef Stephane, visited our  table a couple of times and was so sweet to our children. He went above and beyond to make sure our dining experience was the best and he succeeded.  It did help that ultimate foodie, Al Roker, was seated next to us towards the end of our meal. Not to mention,  knowing one of the chef’s at Daniel Boulud’s in NYC helps, however, to the DB staff’s credit, they did not learn of that piece of info until our friend called and had champagne delivered to our table.  (Thanks Chris!) Regardless, the food was literally to die for.  It was so fabulous that we got take-out the following night, which, the chef didn’t recommend, but my husband HAD to have the famous DB Burger.  Needless to say, it was worth it.
